This is an extraordinary election season. Just about 20 years ago, the Willie Horton ad brought American politics to a new low. And through campaign and independent ads, speeches, tactics and biased media coverage, racist dog whistle politics continues.
For all the talk about racial progress, let us not forget that race is part of every electoral cycle, in the coded racist appeals made by politicians who want to win at any cost. It corrodes our political discourse, and impedes genuine progress against racism and racial inequality.
